Where should I take my antique jewelry to get it appraised? I have heard stories from people who took their jewelry in to an appraiser and were told a certain price . The appraiser offered to buy the piece, and they later they found out that it was actually worth much more than they were told. How do I know if the appraiser is being honest?

HI! I don't know how you can tell when one is being honest but you can probably get something appraised at any of the top jewelry stores in yoru area. The Big name jewelry stores will probably not lie as they probably don't buy jewelry from customers anyways. The smaller guys might want it though.

Hi Elvis

Have you thought about finding an appraiser here:

http://www.appraisers.org/findappraiser/

You should be able to get a pretty good idea of what your item is worth from one of their members.

Hope that helps

There are even stories of stones being swapped out when appraisal or maintenance work is done so BE CAREFUL.

Go into a jewelry store and go to the oldest person there, preferably someone wearing a loupe.

I have gone to pawnshops to ask what they would give for something. Then I magnify the value for that.

That's a good idea. What do you use as the magnification factor? 2, 3?

Do you think pawnshop is the best way? I think they are robbers.. But I agree with the jewelry store. I can say that the oldest person will be able to tell you the real price. Do you want to sell you antique jewelries Elvis? Why? You don't like them anymore?
Give it to me then

I think it is a bad idea to go to get them appraised at some pawn shop as they are the same as the fraud apprasers that you have mentioned! They buy things that could have cost you a lot at a very low price and if ever you want to get them back then you have to pay a lot more than he gave you when you sold it!

well elvis, i dont really know how you'll get to know the real price of that antique jewerly, because nowadays many peope are being cheated with wrong prices. i suggest you check it out in many different jewelry shops before you get a right price for it. this will help you understand on how those jewelrers tell the prices in different ways. i hope you'll get a reasonable price for your antique piece.
