I've heard a lot of horrible things about tongue piercings. One of the most recent stories I've heard was about a young man that died. His tongue was so swollen that it blocked the air passage. Is this possible? I was considering getting a tongue ring, and I'd just like to know the dangers that I could face.

I really wanted a tongue piercing, but I've heard some pretty wild scare stories about it too - I'd heard that if the piercing was done wrong your tongue could be paralysed.

I'm not certain that this is even true, but it was enough to convince me that I didn't need one that badly. Plus, you can't eat solid food for a while after it's done, and I like food too much for that :D

Wow, I'd neverheard about your tongue being paralyzed. I'm going to ask a friend that has a tongue piercing what happened to her after she got hers done. I'll report back if I find out anything interesting.

I've never heard of a tongue being paralyzed either, but it could probably happen. I have heard of alot of people's tongue piercings getting infected though. It's a pretty common thing. And I know that the tongue does swell up for a few days. I remember when the hostess at the restaurant where I used to work got her tongue pierced and she couldn't talk right for over a week. It was so funny listening to her asking customers " Hewo, woo yoo wike soaking or non soaking":)

I don't know about the paralyzed thing but I would think that if your tongue got really infected it could swell upa nd block the airway. Especially if it happened whileyou were sleepig or something. Scary.

BUt what is even worse is getting your tongue forked. Have yo heard of that? I swear it is the most icky thing I have ever seen in my whole life.

Eek. I guess it could happen, realistically. I mean, anything becoming swollen can block things and cause an issue. But, probably the largest possibility is that he swallowed his tongue. It sounds stupid, but it happens more than you'd think.

I've never heard about tongue paralysis, but then again I don't know -that- much about piercings - that's why I'm here to learn. :P

And I know what you mean about food.. God. I'd die without a big hunk of meat on my plate!

Theoretically any of these things could happen because given a certain situation especially one involving the body - loads of stuff could go "wrong" etc. But in general, I think most piercings get infected but that's mainly just from poor care of oneself.

Agreed. Infection would make things swell, but if he was asleep he probably would've swallowed his tongue or something in which case he'd suffocate to death. And by forked you mean making it like a snakes?

I heard a story that was similar a few days ago: the young man's ring fell out while he slept, and he chocked to death on it. So sad :(
