Hey guys have you ever wonder why do we have to give a ring in symbol of engagement?
I thought about it and also talk about it with my parents and some other friends but none of them were able to give a correct answer… let’s talk about it; maybe you’ll be able to give the reason…

This is a good question Mercutio! In fact many of us don’t know the origin of this tradition. I have to say that I am among these persons!!!
All I heard about it is the fact that it’s extremely common to have a diamond engagement ring. This tradition just suits me, so no reasons to ask why!

Ok Karen… as for the Diamond ring, in many cultures, it has become the ultimate symbol of love, devotion and commitment.
Since you are in love of diamonds, do you why do we have chosen Diamond instead of another precious stone???

Hmmm! Indeed more and more people are asking themselves why a ring??? I think I even saw an old thread about this!
I once heard about a logical theory which came from slavery. In fact, it is that the ring was like a miniature "slave band", which denoted that the woman was the man's property.

Oh it may seems logical, but I really don’t like this theory, hopefully it’s no longer the reason of this tradition!!!

Yeah well, very interesting point of view but let me tell you what… I think it would be better looking at it from this point of view --->> when the woman puts the ring on the man’s finger, he becomes her slave
Sounds more realistic to me

I agree with Adorna!
When seen in that way it does seem more logical than in Berni’s explanation… even if that’s the way it used to be before, things have changed now. The relationship has evolved

But not everywhere

Why is everything centered so much around the ring? Isn’t it just a symbol, representing the union of the man and the woman? Why elevate it to this high pedestal and give it an importance that it maybe does not deserve?
So what, if the ring gets lost, does the marriage or engagement break as well?

Haha!!!! Too funny!
Do you think that the man will accept to be the slave?
There no reason for this!

Yes indeed things have changed and the relationship has evolved but why to such an extreme extent?

I agree that women had fought for their rights and are today considered as equal to men…

This should be the keyword to keep in mind: “Equality”!

Neither the husband nor the wife should become a slave of his or her partner!!!
