This is helpful information when buying stone, the 4c's are necessary to know what you are getting.

1. Cut This is not the shape of your diamond, but the faceting. The amount of facets that your diamond has. An exceptional stone that is cut poorly will look like junk. The best way to tell a good cut is the amount of sparkle, poorly cut stones and heavily included stones will not sparkle much at all.

2.ColorThis is the color of your stone, ranging from D E F (colorless) G H I J (near colorless, faint coloring but barely noticeable) K L M (faint yellow color but definitely noticeable) N O P Q R (Usually referred to as "Champagne") S T U V W X Y Z (Very yellow to brown tint also sold as "Champagne and Cognac", but not Canary)

3.Clarity This is the amount of flaws in the diamond. Could be anything from feathering to carbon to cracks to clouding. FL IF (flawless and internally flawless, not able to be seen under 10x magnification) VVS1 VVS2 (very very slightly included, slight inclusions barely able to be seen with 10x magnification) VS1 VS2 (very slightly included, able to be seen with 10x magnification) SI1 SI2 (slightly included, able to be seen with naked eye) I1 I2 I3 (heavily included, noticeable with naked eye) Anything below I3 is not considered gem quality and is usually used in tools. Again, look for sparkle heavily included stones will not sparkle as much.

4.Carat This does not refer to the size of the stone, but the weight. Depending on the cut the stones may appear larger or smaller but weigh the same.

Hope this helps out anyone that is new to diamond buying! Being in the jewelry business, salesmen will always try to tell you this doesn't matter if you are looking at a poor quality stone.

Most important with all these shapes is that light passing through them is properly refracted in order to give maximum brilliance or sparkle to the diamond

when buying diamond pieces, i always checked for cut and colour...
but about clarity and the other one, carat- i never bothered with that!
think i have to be more attentive and wear shades when i go to the jeweller's, i get so blinded by all those beautiful things that lie behind the counter... i dnt see anything else!

Woah I always thought that I could just go see my usual jewellers and buy the things I like, but here I see all these things that i should consider...
You know guys that am a big man and only a few people would dare mess with me but can it be that some scrupulous people could have fooled me when buying jewellery? I think I'll check that out and follow the four seas next time.

This is very interesting ladyviper, are you into the diamond sale business? You seem to know quite a lot about it! I know most of the things that you have mentioned and I leant all from my dad and his friends.
And for those who are here for long and haven't noticed it yet, the forum's name is derived from the 4 c's stated here itself, just like maxi stated!
