Interesting that most of the steps you can't really do when buying online. Need to go to the local jeweler after all?

Check out all the online shops first. Only go to the jeweler when you can't find what you want but you know what you want and roughly how much it should cost. Let the jeweler make it for you. Having said that there are some good online stores that make to order as well. I've never bought from them so I don't know if you get what you think you're getting.

IMO, go to a jeweler and pay a bit more. Jewelers I know work on the stuff untill you're happy. Can't do that online?

Go to your local jewlers, find the exact ring you want, go on the net and find it cheaper, best of all worlds.

True, but this may take a lot of patience and time.
