I just learned some facts about the history of the discovery of platinum. I want to share that with you.

Naturally occurring Platinum metals and alloys were used in Pre-Columbian Native American times but were not referenced in European writing until after 1557. The Spaniards at one time had called platinum "little silver" and discarded it as a useless metallic waste.

Later on platinum was rediscovered by an astronomer named Antonio de Ulloa and Don Gorge Juan y Santacilia. This discovery was made in the mid 1700s during an expedition in Peru. The British Intercepted their ship on the return voyage. Ulloa was treated well by the British but was not allowed to publish the news of the unknown metal until 1748.

Between the time that the metal was held hostage, so to speak, another man named Charles Wood got a hold of the element in 1741. The symbol for platinum has been created by combining the trading symbols for both gold and silver.

Default I think that is amazing.
I think that is amazing. It's amazing also how people can discover that something really has some value. I am always intrigued by how we place value on something. Most of the time the value placed on something is not known for a long time until we find a use for it, make money from it, etc.

I think it was terrible that they hold those men hostage who knew about the plat though. That was not right. It's like...some countries-not all, but some-like to have control of e-thing don't they?

I am glad that we have the opp to buy plat today.

Did the pre-Columbian Native American Know that platinum was so precious? How about that Antonio de Ulloa and Don Gorge Juan y Santacilia?
I mean, how did they come to know that it was a precious metal? I mean, when they discovered it, it was just a raw metal.
Am I wrong?
I'm really confused

The information about its discovery is very intersting, but what does the symbols mean? What did you mean by the symbols of gold and silver combined?!

In those times it didn't have the precious metal title! It was just a metal they had never came across, so they took it for something special< that goes for all precious metals!

I read that platinum goes back to prehistory. They were found in meteorites that crashed to earth as far back as 2 billion years ago, can you believe that? Since then this rare and fascinating treasure has made periodic appearances all through history and mysteriously disappearing for some centuries at a time, both puzzling and captivating those who have come seen it. Well, the ancient Egyptians, pre Incan civilization and Spanish conquistadors all knew that platinum existed. Then, it re emerged in the 1700’s to fascinate kings and alchemists in a similar way. Platinum has become very trendy in the 19th and 20th centuries and nowadays, it is the precious metal of choice of celebrities.

It joins a little bit what iluvjewels said in the thread " Occurance of Platinum in the Earth and Mixed" and that one ...
