Platinum actually has very little shine, once the shine is gone it is near impossible to bring back. That is with today's platinum only, antique platinum was 100% plat and todays is mixed with other alloys. The shine on most of today's platinum comes from Rhodium plating. The Rhodium will last quite awhile depending on what you put your jewelry through. Bleaches, chemicals, reaction with medications, and frequent professional cleanings (aside from steam) will make it dull much quicker. You can replate it, if the finish does dull. A lot of custom jewelry stores have the ability to do this, in store.
