What exactly is a promise ring?

Is it just where you and a buddy make some promise to do something like.. be friends forever then share some ring with eachother ? Obviously I've never gotten one if I don't know what they are!

I guess its like making a covenant, but I also never got one so I don't know for sure.

I once wore a promise ring, which I talked about in another thread :). For most couples, it is a "pre-engagement" ring that symbolizes commitment. I think these rings are most popular with teenage couples; my younger sister's boyfriend gave her one a few years ago.

To me promise rings don't make any sense. If you want to just buy your girl a ring, buy a ring. And if you want to get engaged, then buy an engagement ring.

My high school boyfriend gave me a promise ring. It was so cute. It was something we wanted to do at the time. The promise didn't last long and certainly didn't lead to an engagement.
