well, guys give their girlfriends promise rings when they are not ready to be engaged...does it mean a promise to get engaged sometime later?

I think somebody said (in another thread) it's like a pre-engagement ring. But if young people give it to each other, then I guess you can say that it is a promise to get engaged in the future, sort of a long pre-engagement.:)

Yeah, it's sort of like that. But I think it suits the youger couples more. That's just my opinion. :D

I would think that if a boy gives a girl a promise ring, he is at least thinking that engagement is a possibility. Rings are associated with commitment and fidelity. Promise rings are more popular with young couples who won't be ready for engagement in the next few years.

A promise ring or friendship ring is a small, inexpensive ring given to a boyfriend or girlfriend, to promise to be committed in a serious relationship. These indicate that serious courting is under way.

A promise ring can be worn on any finger on the left or right hand, although ring fingers are far preferred. Most often it is the left ring finger, but due to engagement confusion, the right ring finger is finding acceptance in today's world.
