Many people are allergic to nickel. But nickel is widely used as a bleaching agent in white gold. That is why there are many people has experience allergic reactions to the material. In order to avoid this palladium is suggested to be used instead of nickel. To be allergic free from white gold, choose pieces that used palladium and not nickel as bleaching agent.

Yeah, is there a way to tell whether nickel or palladium was used by just looking at the jewelry?

This is my question too. I think it's hard to judge which material they used.

You are absolutely right, it is the alloys that people are allergic to not the gold. When you buy costume jewelry in the US, it will often state "nickle free" on the packaging. Stainless steel is sometimes used in costume jewelry, but not in gold jewelry. My mother used to have and allergy to the alloys in yellow gold, making white gold her only option for most of her life. She is now ok with either gold, so either they started changing alloys or she simply grew out of it. Not surprising though, allergies can arise or disappear anywhere from 6 mos to 60 years of age.

my cousin got awful swellings some time after she started using a really nice piece of white gold jewellery. it's only afterwards that we found out she was actually allergic to the nickel used in the white gold... so for those who think you're allergic to gold, that's not completely true! there's no known allergies to pure gold. so before buying any gold jewellery, just be certain of what you're purchasing!
