Because 18k white gold is 75% gold, and 14k white gold is 58.3% gold, jewelry made from these metals has a slight yellow color. To enhance the whiteness, almost all white gold is plated with rhodium, a shiny, white metal which is extremely hard. Depending on the amount of wear to a piece of jewelry, over time this rhodium plating may wear off, revealing the original metal color. Re-plating is a simple process that can be done to restore your jewelry's whiteness if needed.

What is the point in plating white gold? Surly keep the original colour rather than plating an expensive metal in a less expensive one.

Most of it is already plated when you buy it. When that coating wears off, it is common to have it re-plated. Alot of people do not know that it's plated in the first place, so they do not know that it can be re-plated, but it is not unsual for it to need re-plating.

I wasn't aware that white gold is plated. The only white gold ring I have is my class ring and I've not had a problem with it. Of course, I never wear it either, so that probably keeps it looking good.

why don't you just have the whole ring made of rhodium since you don't see the gold anyways? or maybe rhodium is more expensive than white gold??  strange...

Try here *ttp://gfo.buyol.com/Group/QPLUUJWUEB2NKJYN.htm

Some of these look very nice though a bit over stylish for my tastes.

What's in your mind Thrawn?
